In Brightest Day

Today’s comic movies are not geared toward me, nor should they be. Comics need those with seventy years ahead of them not seventy years behind them. One of my subscription services is trying to get me interested in a new Green Lantern series. So far, with my strength of ten Grinches plus two, I remain un-tempted. But, this time it’s different. It’s not the movies it’s the comics that lost me.

Once upon a time the Guardians of Oa and its Green Lantern Corps went apoplectic when one of it’s power rings, that of the great Abin Sur, sought it’s new bearer on planet Earth; the most bigoted, belligerent, backwater bastion of brainless brutes known to the universe. If that weren’t bad enough, the ring said no to Kal, Dianna, Bruce (and Steve Rogers, too) and came back with… Hal Jordan? Turns out the ring knew what it was doing. Out of billions and billions of souls only one was found worthy. Today’s rings, much like Thor’s hammer, can be used by anyone. (Insert car crash SFX here)

A new Lantern for a new age, fine. No more old white men, fine. Everyone’s a Lantern... as with Alan Scott, start over from scratch if you want but, if you stick with the Oan/Corp model, pick a Lantern, any Lantern, and call it a day.
